Founded in 1975 and enlarged in 1997 by the merger with SEFES, PIMEC is today the most representative employers' confederation representing and advocating the interests of micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and the self-employed of Catalonia. SME corresponds to the definition provided by the European Commission in its Recommendation 2003/361/EC.

PIMEC is the most representative social agent in Catalonia. It participates on 300 boards and work committees with the public administrations and the most representative social agents. Moreover, it regularly expresses its opinion on public legislative and political initiatives and issues proposals to advocate and represent the interests of SMEs and the self-employed. This task is developed both in Catalonia at all levels (local, regional and autonomous community) and in the whole of Spain and Europe.

PIMEC’s aim is to raise awareness and work for economic policy to be designed as an engine to foster the development of SMEs and the self-employed, the main business sector of Catalonia, as they account for over 99.8% of all enterprises, 70% of jobs and 65% of GDP in our country.

PIMEC watches over the interests of SMEs and the self-employed through its presence as a social agent on boards and committees, as well as lobbying actions in key fields of interest for SMEs and their competitiveness.
